Dinosaur Dig!

This week was SO much fun.  I had fun and I know all of the children did to because there is nothing more fun than DINOS!

This week we read the book Dinosaur Dig by Penny Dale.  It’s the perfect book for small children because it incorporates counting, actions, dinosaurs and big machines – oh yes, which all make very, very loud noises.  So our young audience was definately enchanted by this book.

We followed our book with  a great little song:

I Wish I Were a Great Big Dinosaur (To the tune of the Oscar Myer Weiner Song)

Oh I wish I were a great big dinosaur, That is was I truly want to be,For if I were a great big Dinosaur, Everyone would run away from me!  (AAAHHHH)  You can also add: Stomp away, crawl away, slither away)

All the kids had fun screaming – but not as much fun as this weeks craft which was, who would have guessed, a Dino Dig!

This was a super easy craft that needed:

  • small tinfoil containers – we used mini loaf pans, but foil tart shells would have been great too -
  • Plaster of Paris – be careful as it sets super fast and gets hot while doing so – Adults only!
  • Small plastic dinos – the size is really up to you.
  • A pick – we used the blunt end of a paintbrush, but a butter knife would work too.

Steps:

  1. Put the plastic dino or other item you want to “dig up” in the foil tray
  2. Mix your plaster and pour immeadiately
  3. Cover as much of your dino as you wish.  We let bits stick out so our kids knew where to dig.
  4. Let dry.  If you mix the plaster properly it will dry straight away, but if it is too thin it could take a few hours.  Very watery plaster will have to be repoured because it just won’t set!
  5. Let your kids dig! My daughter saw these on my counter before the program today and was so excited, she wanted to dig all of them up!

Pets Week!

Oct 11/12 was Pets Week! at the Cornerstone Playroom.   We read, “Curious George Walks the Pets” and introduced our newest friend to the Playroom….

The best part about our new Hamster is that you can take him home whenever you like!   He also comes with a Pet Owner in Training bag that will help parents and children learn to care for a little critter.

After introducing our new friend we all sat down and made some Chia Pets of our own.   We used knee high stockings, poured some grass seed in the toe and then filled with peat moss then tied the stockings, added faces and set our new friends in a tray of water.  I will have to post later when they are all “furry”.

September at the Playroom

September has whizzed by without even one post!  Can you believe it!  But that doesn’t mean nothing has been transpiring at CFY Headquarters -First and foremost, the CFY Summer Club Mural at the Small Lot of H.O.P.E was completed and has been hung behind the Carlyle Elementary School, If you haven’t seen it in person – you should!  The kids and Coordinators did a fantastic job and the garden has never looked better. The Playroom has also kicked back into our regular Tues/Wed programming and coffee hour.  Here you can see one of our Playroom kids using our toy bucket to it’s full potential!  From the other side of the room all we could see was a little spiff or red hair in our bucket!

Plus our office has taken on a whole new look (and location!) we are now in a beautiful brand new office that was built by the Town of Carlyle and furnished by a generous grant from the Spectra Credit Union.  (Along with our new Playroom floor and baby change station – See our shout out to them in our wall art below)

(Check out our wall art that will be used to display some of the art that we collect around here)  It has been a great September and it will be a great October too!  Stay tuned for some great afterschool programming – harvest crafts – and even some trick or treating!!!
